Declan Rooney said he just wanted “to help women in need” when he decided to set up a private website to donate his sperm.
But after fathering 54 children in just two years, some are questioning Rooney and the ethics and legal implications of his many sperm donations.
The Daily Mail reports that some are calling on authorities to investigate the 43-year-old British man, who has fathered 17 boys and 14 girls since he set up a sperm donation website last year. Fifteen other women are pregnant by Rooney, and he has eight of his own children, the report states.
In one case, Rooney donated by putting his sperm into a takeaway coffee cup inside a museum toilet, the report states.
Rooney advertises on Facebook and a mobile phone app. His ad reads: “If you are an infertile couple because your partner had a vasectomy and wish to expand or start your family or your partner has a low sperm count, defective sperm, military injury, cancer treatment, etc., I am willing to help either through artificial insemination or naturally with no strings attached.”
Rooney said he does not make money off his sperm donations; he only charges for expenses. He also denies that the word “naturally” in his advertisement means having sex with his clients.
“I’m not ashamed,” Rooney said. “I have helped women create families. Egg donors get treated like saints, sperm donors get treated like back alley, smutty boys – but I’m not doing a bad thing.”
But Rooney has vastly exceeded the UK’s official limits for sperm donation – 10 children, according to The Daily Mail.

Rooney told the news outlet that prior to donating, he requires proof of income to ensure that the women can afford a child. However, financial support is just one aspect to fatherhood. Emotional and familial support also are important for healthy children. Studies show that children do better in a two-parent household.
Authorities also are concerned that Rooney’s 54 children could one day unknowingly have children with another half-brother or half-sister, according to the report.
