Noting that no vehicle can run any highway above the speed of 80km per hour, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said the speed will be controlled through installing ‘Speed Governor’ machine in vehicles.”The maximum speed limit will be specified through the speed governor machine and if any driver tries to violate the limit, his vehicle will get stopped automatically,” he said. The minister came up with the disclosure at the 23rd National Road Safety Council (NRSC) meeting with transport sector stakeholders arranged at the conference room of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).Although many decisions were taken over the time, a few of them have been implemented, he said, adding that the government is very serious this time to implement all the plans gradually. Issuing a note of warning, Obaidul Quader said no cattle market will be allowed on or alongside highways ahead of upcoming Eid-ul-Azha to ensure easy movement of vehicles.Drives against unfit vehicles will continue on the highways and city corporation areas until further notice, he informed. The minister said the exit and entry points of the capital will be renovated before the upcoming Eid.He also directed authorities concerned to make the roads attached to the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover operative. Attending the programme, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan observed the amount of fine for illegal parking should be increased to a substantial level so that drivers dare to park their vehicles here and there.He also emphasised ensuring parking areas at busy places in the city. Mentioning that a few people are issuing fake driving licences to drivers, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said stern actions should be taken against those recruiting unskilled drivers with fake licences. He also claimed that the number of death in road accidents has been slashed in recent years compared to increased population and vehicles. Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Annisul Huq said the process to relocate Karwanbazar wholesale market and Tejgaon truck stand elsewhere is underway. State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Tarana Halim, State Minister for LGRD Moshiur Rahman Ranga, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokon, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and transport owners’ association leaders were present at the meeting.
