As the buzz about a possible Sheikh Hasina’s new cabinet gathers momentum, speculation is running high who will get place in it and who will be left out.
Hasina will be sworn in as Prime Minister of Awami League government for third straight term on Monday as her party secured an absolute majority in the 11th parliamentary polls.
Informed sources said, a 45-member new cabinet will take oath following swearing in ceremony of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at a simple ceremony.
President Abdul Hamid will administer oath to Sheikh Hasina and her new cabinet members. Later, Sheikh Hasina will allocate portfolios of her ministers.
Party insiders said, Sheikh Hasina will pick up trusted party-men in her new cabinet
dropping several key ministers of the old cabinet. They may not get chance in her new council of ministers due to their tainted image and controversial roles during the last five years of the offices.
Besides, several senior members of the current cabinet will be accommodated in the new cabinet after reshuffling their portfolios.
It is speculated that Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Food Minister Qamrul Islam, Textiles and Jute Minister Emaj Uddin Pramanik are also likely to be left out for their tainted image and poor performance.
Sources said, Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan are also in the firing line.
Besides, State Minister for Information Tarana Halim, State Minister for Health Zahid Maleque, State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed and Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy also may not get any place in the new cabinet.
Of them, Maya and Joy didn’t get party tickets for contesting the 11th parliamentary election.
The new cabinet is likely to include current captain of the One Day Internationals for Bangladesh national cricket team Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports.
Speculation earlier run high that the incumbent Finance Minister AMA Muhith may be left out in the Hasina government’s new cabinet.
But an anonymous senior AL leader told The New Nation yesterday that he might be retained in his portfolio in the new cabinet. “There are not many senior economic experts in her cabinet who can be entrusted with the vital task of running the Finance Ministry. Muhith may serve another year as Finance Minister under the technocrat quota.
Four other technocrat ministers are also likely to be inducted in Sheikh Hasina’s new cabinet.
The cabinet might include Awami League Presidium members Muhammad Faruq Khan and Dr Abdur Razzak, Prime Minister’s Private Sector Affairs Adviser Salman F Rahman, Awami League Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni, the party’s Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Central Committee Member Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, Iqbal Hossain Apu and Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury.
Sheikh Hasina led 49-member cabinet after she was sworn in as Prime Minister of the AL-led coalition government for the second consecutive term, securing an absolute majority in the 10th parliamentary polls, which was boycotted by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led 18-party alliance.
