Speakers at a workshop in city on Saturday called for specific sectoral and ministry-based budgetary allocation in the national budget for fiscal year 2015-16 for the development of disabled.
It is not possible to achieve our overall development by excluding the disabled from the mainstream of development. If the allocation is made in the budget, it would pave the way for development of the disabled, who are about two crore of the country’s total population, they said.
“The issue of disability should be focused while planning for the budget in order to ensure the formation of an inclusive society. The issue of education and employment for the disabled should get importance. Otherwise, the rights of the disabled would be neglected”.
They also demanded for keeping the provision of reserved seat for the disabled in the Jatiya Sangsad and proper implementation of the Disabled People’s Rights and Protection Act, 2013 and 10 percent job quota, fixed by the government for the disabled.
Bangladesh Visually Impaired People’s Society (BVIPS) held the worktshop titled ‘Allocation and Reality for Disabled in the National Budget’ with the support of European Union and Sightsavers at the Daily Star Bhaban.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan attended as the chief guest at the function with BVIPS President Advocate Musherraf Hossain Mazumder in the chair.
