As the chemically treated seasonal fruits have flooded the city markets, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has decided to launch a special drive to prevent entry and marketing of chemical laced fruits. “The drive will begin from Wednesday night. DMP will set up check posts in all the entrances to Dhaka to prevent the entry of poisonous fruits,” DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed made the announcement at a press conference at DMP media centre on Sunday afternoon.DMP has taken the initiative for the city people to have formalin free fruits, he said.As part of the drive, DMP will set up special check posts at the city’s eight entry points from Wednesday night, he said.The entry points are: Postogola Bridge, Wizeghat in Sadarghat, Abdullahpur Bridge, Dhaur Bridge, Babubazar Bridge, Gabtoli, Jatrabari Police Station and the intersection beside Kamal Bridge at Demra.Teams comprising representatives of DMP, Bangladesh Standards And Testing Institute (BSTI) and the Deputy Commissioner’s office will conduct the drive.The DMP chief said they will conduct the drives with support from Dhaka divisional administration. “In the drives, we want all stakeholders, including FBCCI, Dhaka City Corporation, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and BSTI to be beside us,” he added.To control the use of formalin, its import should be restricted, he said.The import, use and distribution of formalin should be brought under a licensing system, he said.He also called upon people from all walks of life to cooperate with police.
