Speakers at a human chain programme yesterday called for relocating chemical factories, chemical warehouses and shops from residential areas of old Dhaka to safer places for the sake of public safety.
People in old Dhaka are at high risk as chemical factories, warehouses and shops have been set up illegally, they told the human chain at Nimtoli area in old Dhaka, a release said. Environmentalist group Poribesh Bachao Andolan (POBA) in cooperation with different organizations formed the human chain.
General Secretary of POBA Engineer M Abdus Sobhan, President of Old Dhaka Nagorik Udyak Nazim Uddin and President of Dhaka Youth Foundation Shahid Muhammad Shahidullah, among others, spoke on the occasion.

The demand for shifting chemical establishments has been intensifying following the Nimtoli fire tragedy in old Dhaka in 2010 which caused from a chemical factory. According to the release, there are over 1,000 chemical factories and warehouses in Dhaka city. Among those, the number of unauthorized factories and warehouses are 850.
