Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has urged the private organizations to extend their supports, alongside the government, to ensure all necessary facilities for the elderly citizens.
“Along with the government, the non-government agencies should extend their supports for the welfare of the elderly people,” she said while addressing a function at the city’s Gulshan Club on Saturday evening.
Referring to the government initiatives for the aged people, the speaker said the government is providing old age allowances to the aged people under the safety net programme.
To ensure facilities for the elderly people, the non-government organizations have to come forward alongside the government, she said at the function organized by Care In Need Foundation.
Dr Shirin said the population trends in Bangladesh show that the country is well into the third phase of demographic transition, having shifted from a high mortality-high fertility regime to a low mortality-low fertility one, adding so, the number of aged population gradually will rise in the country.
