Speaker for strengthening parliamentary democracy

Executive Committee Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday called upon members of all parliaments across the Commonwealth countries to work together to make the parliamentary democracy in the world stronger.
Dr Shirin, also Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament, made the appeal while addressing an international conference titled ‘Human Rights in the Modern Day Commonwealth: Magna Carta to Commonwealth Charter’, held in London, said a Parliament Secretariat release. Speakers and Deputy Speakers of different commonwealth countries’ parliaments attended the conference organised by the CPA. Dr Shirin said the CPA keeps on playing its due role in strengthening the parliamentary democracy across the globe.
She also said the CPA is working to ensure the participation of parliament members in decision-making process and various development activities, including ensuring gender equity, reducing maternal mortality rate and child mortality rate, alleviating poverty and facing adverse impacts of climate changes.
Parliament members Sir Edward Garnier and Sir Malcom Bruee also spoke at the conference.
Imran Ahmed, MP of Awami League, also joined the conference as a member of the Bangladesh delegation.
