Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday said ensuring coordination between economics and morality is necessary to build a poverty and discrimination-free society.
“Building a poverty and discrimination-free society would be possible when morality will be integrated with economics while framing policies,” she said, addressing the inaugural session of three-day 20th Biennial Conference of the Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) here.
Held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) at Kakrail, the function was chaired by BEA President Dr Ashraf Uddin Chowdhury.
Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Chairman Prof Rehman Sobhan spoke on the occasion as the guest of honour. Convener of the Conference Preparatory Committee Dr Abul Barkat and BEA general secretary Dr Jamal Uddin Ahmed also spoke, among others.
The speaker said along with eradicating poverty and addressing income inequality through boosting growth, it is also necessary to reach the benefits of growth to the grassroots people.
Mentioning that it would be possible to attain inclusive growth through ensuring proper and equal distribution of wealth, Shirin Sharmin said: “Only then, the economic emancipation, as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be attained,”
The speaker said if economics is integrated with morality, then it would be possible to take more effective policies alongside undertaking measures and plans to eradicate poverty and discrimination.
