Jatiya Sangsad Speaker and President of 136th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Sunday stressed on taking concrete steps in removing global inequalities.
The global inequality was not given due importance when the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was adopted and worked on it, she said prior to joining the governing council meeting of the 136th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.
The second-day of the five-day 136th IPU assembly that began at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on Saturday brought the IPU delegations to discuss about different topics focusing on redressing inequalities and preventing outside interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
Speakers, Deputy Speakers, lawmakers from the IPU member states delivered in the governing council for removing global inequality.
Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said the IPU standing committees would prepare a draft resolution after general debate on Redressing Inequalities:
Delivering on Dignity and Well-Being for All.
Working papers would be prepared with a view to remove global inequality, she added.
The Jatiya Sangsad Speaker said elimination of poverty is not reducing the gap of discrepancies between rich and the poor segment of society.
Dr Shirin, also Executive Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), observed that there have been economic growth and development but their impact are not reaching out among the poor and marginalized people.
“So equal arrangements are crucial for bringing those segments of population in the society to include them into the mainstream of development,” she opined.
She said the country’s constitution has ensured the fundamental rights of people specially women and children. “So, it would be an easy task for us to adopt any programme for the well-being of the disadvantage section of people,” she added.
