Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament and Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urged all parliamentary members to work together for sustainable development for the alleviation of poverty across the world.
“Members of parliaments (MP) play the key role of empowering the general people, so MPs including parliamentary network, World Bank, IMFS have to work jointly to build sustainable development in the world by removing poverty and ensuring women empowerment,” quoted a Parliamentary Secretariat statement here on Monday.
She was speaking as the key panel discussant at a conference titled ‘Global Parliamentary Conference Gender Equity and Women’s Rights in the Post 2015’ organised by Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF at Preston auditorium of World Bank building at Washington in the USA.
“We need to boost women’s access to education, health care, employment and trade to minimise the gap between men and women’s economic opportunities, to increase their pace of socio-economic development and ultimately, consolidate gains in poverty eradication,” she said.
Chief Whip ASM Firoz, Muhibur Rahman Manik MP, Sanjida Khanam MP were also present, among other representatives from 100 countries.
