Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, Superintendent of Police (SP), Narayanganj has been transferred to the Police Headquarters.
The Home Ministry issued an order in this regard on Sunday.
He was transferred two days after Partex Group’s chairman MA Hashem’s daughter-in law and grandson were allegedly picked up by a team of Narayanganj police led by SP Harun from their Gulshan residence in Dhaka.
On Saturday, SP Harun at a press conference said that police seized bullets and drugs from the car of Hashem’s son and Bangladesh Cricket Board Director Showkat Aziz Russell in early hours of Saturday from Narayanganj.
Police detained the driver Sumon after recovering 28 rounds of bullet, 1,200 yaba pills, 24 bottles of foreign liquor, 48 cans of beer and Tk 22,300 cash in the car.
The SP also said that Shawkat Aziz Russell and his driver were sued under the Arms and Drugs Act following the incident.
Russell’s wife Farah Russell and his teenaged son Anab Aziz were in the car, an SUV, when police detained the driver, he said.
Police detained them for primary interrogation.
Later, Hashem came to Narayanganj SP office and freed his daughter-in-law and grandson from police custody.
Russell told media on Sunday afternoon that SP Harun was furious over him for refusing to pay him big amount of extortion.
As he (Russell) denied paying off, SP Harun came from Narayanganj and picked up his wife and son from their Gulshan residence in his absence.
Russell is the chairman and managing director of Amber Group, which was formed after splitting Partex Group’s businesses.
Russell also alleged that SP Harun and his associates took his car from the Dhaka club on Thursday night and staged the drama.
He also shared a video of Narayanganj police’s raid at his Gulshan house on Facebook. The video shows that members of Narayanganj police are taking away his wife and son.
SP Harun could not be reached for comment despite several attempts on his cell phone.
Harun was appointed as SP of Narayanganj on December 4, 2018. After joining as Narayanganj as SP he declared that he would root out criminal activities in the district and eliminate all the dons there.
On Sunday, he was transferred to training reserve force at the Police Headquarters in Dhaka, according to the Home Ministry order.
The members of the force do not perform any responsibility on the ground.
SP Harun, also the general secretary of the Police Service Association, has made headlines several times, first for beating up the BNP’s former chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque during a demonstration in front of the parliament building in 2011.
The BNP had lodged complaints against Harun when he had been working in Gazipur during local government elections in 2016. The government had withdrawn him only to reinstate him later on.
He was working in Dhaka Metropolitan Police as a deputy commissioner after the government withdrew him from Gazipur in August last year following the city corporation elections.
SP Harun had got the charge of Narayanganj ahead of the general election last year after around three months at the headquarters despite the BNP’s objection.
