Superintendent of Police Babul Aktar, who has been remaining absent from office since the murder of his wife on June 5, met his high-profile colleagues at police headquarters on Wednesday.
When contacted AKM Shahidur Rahman, Deputy Inspector General (Crime) of police confirmed The New Nation on Wednesday that Babul came to his office at the police headquarters but did not join.
“He came to his office and stayed there for about an hour. He met some police high ups and talked to them,” he said.
An on-duty constable at the main-gate of the police headquarters, said, he saw Babul Aktar leaving the corridor at about 2:00pm yesterday.
When contacted Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that he has been informed of the matter. Replying to a query, he said there is no bar on Babul Aktar’s joining his office.
Earlier on June 25, Babul was picked up from his father-in-law’s house in Dhaka and interrogated for 15 hours at the Detective Branch (DB) of police office on Minto Road in connection with his alleged links with the murder.
From that day, Babul didn’t join his office and stayed at his in-law’s house in the city’s Khilgaon area.
On July 4, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque told journalists in Chittagong that Babul was still in his job, but not coming to office.
If he continued to do so, the police headquarters would take departmental action against him, the IGP said. On July 21, the IGP also demanded Babul was in service as usual.
SP Babul Akhtar and his father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain watched the news.
Mosharraf Hossain said, “I talked to Babul about his joining. Through the talks, it seems that he would join his office soon.”
Babul was attached to the police headquarters after being promoted to an SP recently. Before that, he was an additional deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), he said.
Earlier, police and his family sources said Babul signed his resignation letter while in custody as he was left with two options — face trial for his alleged links or quit the job.
The resignation letter, however, is yet to be formally submitted to the police headquarters.
On June 5, three assailants stabbed and shot Mahmuda Khanam Mitu dead when she was taking her son to his school bus stop at GEC intersection in the port city.
