SP Babul Akhter may be called again by the investigators for interrogation apparently to draw a conclusion over the episode as police have got sufficient information about the killing of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, which are needed to be cross-checked.
“The investigators may call Babul Akhtar at any time for ‘further discussion’. We don’t want to term it an interrogation. It’s a normal procedure, as he is a plaintiff of the case. He may be called for several times,” Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police [CMP] Md Iqbal Bahar told The New Nation over telephone on Friday evening.
When asked about the involvement of SP Babul with the murder, the Commissioner said: “No, we can’t say at this moment that Babul was involved in the killing of his wife. We’ve no scope to say that Babul was involved, as we haven’t any specific information till the date.”
About his [SP Babul] forced resignation he further said, “Better ask the media those have carried the news of resignation. I’ve no information about his resignation.”
SP Babul was supposed to be an ‘active investigator’ of his wife’s murder case,
not only as a husband but also as a police official. But he is now totally mum, especially after 15 hours detention in detective branch headquarters on June 24. Not only that, he has also turned into a villain with widespread suspicion of his involvement in the murder.
Raising allegation against police, Babul’s father-in law Mosharraf Hossain said: “They are trying to divert the case. I want justice in my daughter’s murder case. But the investigators are shifting their stance from the focal point of investigation.”
Investigating Officer of Mitu murder case Assistant Commissioner of CMP Mohammad Kamruzzaman said, “There are supporting investigating teams, if there is any necessity to interrogate Babul Akhtar further, they will take decision about the matter.”
Meanwhile, mystery shrouds over the ‘existence’ of Abu Musa Sikder, the main coordinator of Mitu murder incident, while police declared him ‘absconder’ but family claimed that he has already been taken under police custody.
Investigators think it would be easy for them to unearth the motive behind the sensational murder, if prime suspect Musa also known as Kamrul Islam, is caught. His statement is very much important to crack the case. Especially, it needs to ‘check and cross-check’ some information in presence of Musa, the investigators said.
But family members of Musa claimed that he was picked up by police on June 12. But sources close to the Chittagong Metropolitan Police [CMP] said that Musa and some other suspects, including Rashed alias Bhagina Rashed, Abdul Nabi [who allegedly stabbed Mitu] and Shahjahan [motorbike supplier], were arrested by police about a week ago.
When in queried about Musa’s whereabouts, the CMP Boss said: “Musa is not under our custody. Whatever his family members claiming is totally false. We’re hunting Musa with our highest effort. He is very much needed for the case.”
Confusion grew among the concerned circles when apprehending forced disappearance, Musa’s wife Panna Sikder had urged the government to return her husband either dead or alive.
Sources said, Panna went to Rangunia Police Station to file a General Diary over the disappearance of her husband on Thursday last. But she had to return without filing any GD. “I along with Panna went to Rangunia Police Station to file a GD. But the Duty Officer advised us to file the GD with the concerned police station where the murder took place. So, we came back,” Panna’s father-in-law constable [retd] Faruk Sikder said.
In this backdrop, the police announced that they arrested two more persons, identified as Shahjahan and Saiful Islam Saku, in connection with Mitu murder case conducting raids at Chittagong city and Rangunia upazila in the small hours of Friday.
“We’ve nabbed Saiful Saku from Rangunia and Shahjahan from the city’s Oxygen Crossing,” Devdas Bhattachariya, Additional Commissioner [Crime and Operation] of CMP said.
Quoting confessional statements of Wasim and Anwar given before the court recently under 164 CrPc, the Additional Commissioner said, “Shahjahan took part in the murder directly while Saiful is the brother of Musa, who helped the killers to buy the stolen motorcycle used in the Mitu killing. A Chittagong court yesterday fixed date after Eid-ul Fitr for the hearing when police sought 10-day remand for both the arrestees.”
