South Africa has secured a place in the World Cup quarterfinals after captain AB de Villiers smashed 99 in the team’s 146-run win over the United Arab Emirates. The victory means South Africa finishes the group stage with eight points and likely in second place behind India in Pool B. While other results will determine the final playoff picture, South Africa appears most likely to face Sri Lanka in Sydney. The South Africa lineup appeared scratchy at times after UAE sent them in to bat, but piled on the runs at the end. Its score of 341 for six was always going to be too much against the bottom-place team. UAE was dismissed for 195 in the 48th over in response, with Swapnil Patil scoring an undefeated 57. – Wellington, Mar 12 (AP/UNB)
