Sound pollution threatens public health in Netrakona

Netrakona district town dwellers are being vexed or affected by the sound pollution during everyday or night times.
Intolerable sounds are reportedly created here every day even in the night times as different transport drivers including bus, truck and trolley drivers use horns as their whims and loud speakers and microphones are indiscriminately used for various purposes including calling meetings and other functions or making publicity in the district town.  
Local people alleged that many drivers of buses, trucks and other automobiles do not hasitate to use hydraulic horns, which can make high sounds, in front of schools, colleges and hospitals or clinics violating the laws regularly.
According to the medical officers of district health department, sound pollution is resulted in serious health hazards even life-risk factors for the newly born babies, children, pregnant women and patients suffering from heart and neorological diseases.  
Meanwhile, several dozens of automobile drivers, who were interviewed by this BSS correspondent here recently, expressed their ignorance about the existing laws imposing restrictions on using hydraulic horns in the automobiles.
A leader of Nirapod Sorok Cai Netrakona district unit Alpana Begum opined that the automobile drivers should be imparted training on” how and when and which types of horns should be used for the automobiles” and let them know about the existing laws relating to the matters.
When contacted, an inspector of traffic police forces in Netrakona district Mehedi Hasan acknowledging the situation said that the traffic police have been taking different lawfull actions including filing of cases against the law-violator automobile drivers with side by side of organizing meetings with the automobile drivers and transport workers and leaders for creating awareness about “negative impact of using high powered hydraulic horns ” among them.
In this context, the traffic police inspector underlined the need for whole-hearted cooperation of road transport workers and leaders for reducing the sound pollution which is mainly caused by the automobile horns.
Local people from all walks of life have drawn the attention of the concerened authorities for introducing a high-level official monitoring network to properly over see the activities of the traffic police forces for preventing sound pollution as well as for taking of awareness campaign programs for the transport workers to check the sound pollution.
