Educational activities in renowned Sonarai -Songolshi Degree College in Sadar upazila of the district is greatly being hampered as thundering sound of giant electric generator of a Hong Kong- based factory Ventura Leather Industries (BD) Limited in Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) situating adjacent to the college causing serious sound pollution and health hazard to students and teachers for long time as operating during class hours.
Seeking remedy, college authority submitted petitions to head of administration of the factory and also GM of the EPZ a number of times in last one year but the situation remaining unchanged as none pay heed to the problem.
Visiting the college recently it was found that students and teachers were crowding at college ground after coming out of classes as the leather factory standing within 100 yards of the college was operating generator with thundering sound.
Abdul Mazid, Principal of the college said, “Around 1000 Students and 38 teachers of the college can’t stay in classrooms as Ventura Leather Industries (BD) Ltd factory authority operates generator 3-4 hours daily during class time victimizing us to huge sound pollution and health hazard.”
“By this time some students and teachers are affected with hearing problem while bad headache has become a common phenomenon,” the principal added.
Students of the college Md Shohag, Manik Hossain, Luthfa Begum and others said that they can’t follow teachers’ lectures due to roaring of the generator and many of them felt sick with bad headache, heart palpitation and hearing problem etc.
Sayed Golam Rabbani (50), lecturer of economics department said, “I along with teachers Md Shamsuzzoha and Nurol Islam face severe hearing problem as become victim of continuous sound pollution and we’re under treatment of specialized physician.”
Momtazul Islam, President of college management committee said, “We submitted separate petitions to factory authority and EPZ general manager with written recommendation of local MP also cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor seeking remedy but they intentionally ignore us though education is a national priority.”
Head of human rights dept. of the factory Saiful Islam said, “Allegation of college authority isn’t true as we run generator for little time during load shedding only.”
