Sonargaon Textile Mill of Barisal announced lay off by the mill authority showing shortage of raw materials yesterday.
More than two thousand workers, staffs and officials working in the mill owned by Khan Sons group and enlisted in stock exchange market.
Salaries of the 300 officials, staff remained unpaid since last 3 months and workers unpaid for one month during announcement of lay off.
Salahuddin Chowdhury, manager of the mill said , week-long lay off started from Tuesday and notice was hoisted at mill gate from Monday.
Primarily the lay off was announced till May 5, but that may be extended if supply of raw materials would not be reached at mill. Labours would be informed about withdrawal of lay off and resuming production in due time, he added.
However officials of the security, mechanical maintenance, electricity and medical unit would be out of lay off jurisdictions, the mill manager told.
Copies of the lay off notice also served to the administration, law enforcing agencies, City Corporation, labour directorate, customs and revenue, ministry of industries, and workers would be given compensations as per labour law, the mill authority told.
