Sonali Bank’s Uthali Branch in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district was looted at gunpoint in broad daylight on Sunday.
Armed robbers came on a motorcycle, entered the bank at 1:15pm and looted around Tk 900,000 after holding security guards, employees and customers hostage.
“Three robbers entered the bank on Sunday afternoon wearing PPE, mask and helmets. Within few minutes they confined security guards and all the bank staff in a room at gunpoint and looted Tk 882,900 from the cash counter,” said Branch Manager Abu Bakkar Siddique.
“After looting the money, the robbers fled the scene on the motorcycle,” he added.
Upon receiving the information Jiban Nagar police rushed to the spot.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Uthli camp and Jibannagar police raided different areas after the incident, but failed to nab anyone involved in the robbery.
Deputy commissioner Md Nazrul Islam Sarker and superintendent of police Jahidul Islam have visited the spot.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Munim Lincoln, quoting witnesses, said the robbers fled the scene on a motorcycle after the incident.
SP Jahidul said the robbers confined five employees, three guards and two customers and looted the bank.
He said it is unacceptable that such an important branch of a government bank does not have any CCTV camera installed.
“The bank officials have negligence in this regard. However, the robbers will be brought to book soon. Law enforcers are conducting raids to nab the robbers.”
