A Chittagong court in a verdict on Monday sentenced a man to death and life term imprisonment to his mother for killing their neighbour in Chandanaish Upazila of the district in 2005. The court of Chittagong Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 Mohammad Robiuzzaman delivered the judgment sentencing Humayun Kabir to death and life term imprisonment to his mother, Shamsun Nahar, for killing the neighbour Monir Ahmad.
The court also fined Kabir TK 50,000 and his mother TK 50,000, in default to suffer another six months imprisonment, court sources said.
The prosecution story is, in brief, that Kabir hit bank officer Monir on his head with a spade while his mother attacked the victim on his chest with a stuff following a previous enmity over land on June 10, 2005. The victim was admitted to local health complex and later shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Later, victim’s brother filed a case with Chandanaish police station against Shamsun Nahar and her two sons- Humayun and Shawn in this connection. Police submitted charge sheet acquitting Shawn of the charges on April 19, 2006 while the court framed charges on January 28 in 2008. The court examined a total of 11 prosecution witnesses out of 16 and ordered that the convicts to be sent to the jail, court sources said.
