Societal Events Report :
Popular theatre troupe Somoy staged its acclaimed production Bhag-er Manush at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on November 4.
Bhag-er Manush is an adaptation by Mannan Heera from Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto’s Urdu short story titled Tobatek Singh.
Directed by Aly Zaker, the play depicts the suffering of the people who used to live near the Pakistan-India border during the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.
The play demonstrates this through portrayal of a mental patient in a hospital. The patient strongly opposes the partition that has separated a nation in the name of religion but nobody really cares about his opinion, as he is only a lunatic.
The play also indicates that partition not only divides lands but also affects people immensely in several ways.
The play was staged for the 163rd time since its premiere on December 25, 1997. The play is the 26th production of the theatre troupe, Somoy.
The cast of the play includes Akteruzzaman, Fakhrul Islam Mithu, Pavel Islam, Riaz Mahmud Jewel, Rezaur Rahman, Mansura Rashid Lovely, Tofael Sarker, Sunita Barua, Maksudul Bari Tipu, Anowar, Masum among others.
