A New Nation Report :
In forty-three years of banking operation, Janata Bank, a nationalized commercial bank (NCB) in Bangladesh, has achieved commendable growth in all respects. In respect of size, the bank has been in the second position-the first being Sonali Bank. It means, Janata Bank is the second largest bank among all banks (nationalised commercial, private commercial and foreign banks) functioning in Bangladesh. In some respect, Janata Bank is in the first position.
At the start of banking operation in independent Bangladesh, the then United and Union bank, renamed as Janata Bank after nationalisation, had 261 branches with a work force of 3,408 employees. At the end of 2014, the bank’s manpower rose to 14,413 and its branches nearly quadrupled to 904 units.
During the last fifteen years, Janata Bank has succeeded in achieving lots of success worth mentioning. In the year 2000, Janata Bank’s deposits crossed BDT 100,000 million.
In 2001-2005 and 2011 Janata Bank was awarded “The bank of the year in Bangladesh” by London-based Financial Times Group. In 2006-2009, Janata Bank received “World Best Bank Award” from New York-based financial magazine Global Finance. In 2011-2013, Janata Bank achieved highest operating profit among SCBs (state-owned commercial banks) and foreign remittance of BDT 100,000 million. In 2012, Janata Bank reached the top in respect of CSR (corporate social resposibility) activities among SCBs and achieved the landmark of BDT 400,000 million deposits.
In 2012-2013, Janata Bank was awarded “Wholesale Banking Award”, Retail Banking Award and Bank of the year awarded by Asian Banking and Finance (CMG) Singapore. In 2013, Janata Bank brought all its branches under full automation and earned net profit of BDT 955.14 crore which was highest among the SCBs and PCBs in the country.
There is a scandalous story of stoppage of CSR activities of all state-owned commercial banks and it originated from Janata bank. The then Chairman of Janata Bank stopped disbursing BDT one million for a boat race in Sylhet as suggested by the Finance Minister. Thereafter when Chairman attempted to disburse BDT 100 million for BARDEM’s nursing training institute at its Bashabo site, Finance Minister stopped disbursement of the fund in retaliation.
As the then Chairman exposed everything through a press conference held at the National Press Club the scandalous story was covered by all national dailies.
“The Ministry of Finance has stopped CSR activities of all state-owned banks and we have nothing to do about it” said Md. Abdus Salam, the CEO and Managing Director of Janata Bank while talking to this correspondent in the afternoon on October 13 (Tuesday) last.
