Some 80 percent of industrial parks in Vietnam have violations in environmental regulations, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO) on Monday.
Among the figure, foreign direct investment (FDI) firms account for 60 percent of total enterprises that exceed waste discharge standards, local Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper quoted GSO as saying.
Dinh Duc Truong, an expert from Vietnam’s National Economics University, said in his latest report that despite not becoming an industrialized country, Vietnam is now facing serious environmental problems.
Each year, environmental pollution causes Vietnam an economic loss of 5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) and the figure is expected to rise, said Truong.
