At the 10th council of Bangladesh Krishak League at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Wednesday, the ruling party’s General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Awami League asked its affiliated organisations to get a transparent and clean image for the next generation leadership forgetting the image of a failed government, the central leadership has produced.
Mr Quader said: “Awami League President has started a cleansing operation by conducting drives against illegal casinos and corruption. Keeping in conformity with the ongoing cleansing operation, the party will present the general public of Bangladesh with a clean, transparent leadership of Krishak League”.
But such a wrong message will not inspire anybody. This is the problem with government relying on lies and corruption for remaining in power. The government seems unable to learn to change itself and bring changes necessary to overcome the chaotic situation created with police power and no political foresight.
In line with the ruling party’s policy, new leaders have given the charge of some affiliated organizations, like Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jubo League and Sechchhasebak League, ousting the old ones. And most of the associate bodies’ councils have held in a quick succession within shortest possible time. Nobody has any reason to believe that new leaders are meant to change the government’s image to remain in power with popular support.
What is interesting — the ruling party is of the view that they can alter the pathetic image of the government flourished by plundering thousands of crores taka collectively with other power game players including police.
The bold ways of corruption pursued by the party men were possible with the cooperation of the police. From MPs upwards all corruption was sharing process with the police. It was part of the bureaucratic blueprint how to remain in power defying free election and not heeding the people’s demand.
The Student League and the Youth League were given all the lee way for extortion of money function as forces of terrorism. They worked side by side with the police in creating panic all over the country. This was the politics the government pursued knowingly that the democratic way was not for them to follow. The government flouted all suggestions of moderation and compromised for running the government less aggressively.
It is also deceptive to try to blame the outsiders because the crimes have committed freely and admittedly by their own party men. The government is justified in thinking that the whole nation can be bluffed again to have their way when the government has lost control over the administration. Corruption has created disorder in all the sectors of the government.
When most of the country’s state-run and private commercial banks are tremendously facing liquidity crisis due to fattening of default loans taken by ruling-party backed high-profile businessmen, at that time initiating action against some petty criminals inside the party seems very funny.
Billions of taka invested by poor and middle-income group people in the share market have gobbled up by the ‘ghosts’ dodging all supervising authorities, but no action was taken against them only for keeping close relation with the government men.
Every year, the deposited amounts in Swiss banks have been inflating with the earnings of neo-elite group members through different illegal means, but no measure was taken against them till the date.
Although actions are being initiated against some protected criminals but the real big ones have remained free. But it is our belief that they will not be able to escape accountability for a long time.
What’s most disappointing is that the present government does not have the political common sense of how to overcome the ongoing political, economic and administrative chaos being too much dependent on the sections of the corrupt bureaucrats.
Still, we, on our part, will be anxious to see a peaceful change both helpful and useful for the good of the country. But accountability for plundering and killings will have to be established without exception.
The government has been telling us that nobody is above the law while abusing the law and now opportunity is coming to make the rule of law truly meaningful.
