The People’s Climate March
in Washington, DC was incredibly beautiful. The mall was absolutely packed with a sea of people, and Storytelling with Saris joined the Climate Museum in an art action with saris from Bangladesh and the USA.
We have been working hard on grants for the future feature-length film RISING UP TO CLIMATE CHANGE:
STORYTELLING WITH SARIS.
The talented all-woman film crew includes Leena Jayaswal, Shefali Akhter Shetu, Nandita Ahmed, and Kimberley Williams. Executive producers include the incredible Preema Nazia Andaleeb; and our intern Juliet Hutchings has been invaluable. We are looking for foundation and corporate funding to get this off
the ground, so please send us any
suggestions. An event is planned this winter in Bangladesh.
I am thrilled to be collaborating with Hawai’ian artists on my project RECLAIM for the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center’s AE KAI culture lab on convergence, taking place in Honolulu on July 7 to 9. I am
collaborating with fabric designer and Hawai’ian language activist Hina Kneubuhl, as well as with cartoonist and artist Sloane Leong. We have found many common threads in the struggles of Hawai’i and Bangladesh. RECLAIM will include an installation, a climate and language lab, and a beach performance.
In the next few months, I am
presenting a workshop on gender and climate for the Sierra Club’s Youth Activist Weekend in Washington, DC as well as a series of empowerment
workshops for women of Calgary Women’s Services, a shelter in Anacostia DC. Save the date September 1, 2017
for a performance on the banks
of the Anacostia River.
I am planning a film screening and performance called ‘Deux Degres’
in Paris in September/October as part of a Sister Cities grant from Washington, D C’s Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Paris friends, please email me ASAP with ideas for venues and
communities to work with! I am so excited to see you soon. n
