Aimed at addressing Bangladesh’s triple problems of poverty, vulnerability and marginalization, the government on Thursday unveiled National Social Security Strategy (NSSS) to pave the way for implementing the Seventh Five Year Plan (SFYP) and the Vision-2021.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury unveiled the cover of the NSSS-2015 at a ceremony at the NEC Conference room at city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. General Economic Division (GED) of Planning Commission and the Cabinet Division in collaboration with UK’s Department of International Development (DFID) and UNDP Bangladesh formulated the strategy for the first time in the country.
With Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal in the chair, State Minister for Social Welfare Promode Mankin, chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Planning Ministry Abul Kalam Azad, Dhaka University Professor M M Akash, UNDP country director Pauline Tamesis, DFID Country Representative Sarah Cooke and Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies Dr Binayak Sen also spoke on the occasion.
GED member Dr Shamsul Alam gave a presentation on a brief on the NSSS. In his presentation, Dr Alam said the core of the strategy is a lifecycle approach looking at the particular needs, people have over their entire life, benefitting mothers and children, youths, vulnerable working-age group, the elderly and the persons with disabilities.
