Administrative officials and other stakeholders at a discussion here unequivocally called social collective efforts for preventing drugs addiction to protect the young generation from its deadly consequence.
All the government and non-government organizations concerned including law-enforcers should come forward and work together to involve the community people in the anti-drugs campaign to make it a total success.
They were addressing a discussion titled “Drug-addiction Recovery People and their Normal Life: Prospects and Challenges” held at a city restaurant on Monday afternoon.
Asokta Punarbashan Sangstha (APOSH) organized the discussion attended by large number of drug-recovery people and their guardians.
Commissioner-in-Charge of Rajshahi division Munir Hossain and Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Sarder Tamij Uddin Ahmmed addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with APOSH Executive Director Abul Bashar Paltu in the chair.
Divisional Director of Health Dr Ashish Kumar Shaha, Additional Director of Department of Drugs and Narcotics Control Mujibur Rahman Patwary, Councilor of Rajshahi City Corporation Md Kamruzzaman and Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat also spoke.
During his keynote presentation, Prof Mustafizur Rahman from Department of Anthropology of Rajshahi University stressed the need for modern and adequate safe treatment facilities towards the drug addicts for their rehabilitation as drug and alcohol addiction is a very serious disease.
He pointed out that addiction can tear families and destroy lives. The people who inject drugs and suffer from addiction need a great deal of professional help to overcome this disease. Drug addiction and HIV/AIDS are interlinked. So, there is no alternative to concerted efforts.
He demanded launching treatment through methadone method here for the drug addicts for sake of their quick recovery.
Prof Rahman told the meeting that people, especially the young generation and students of different educational institutions including a number of females, have become addicted to different kinds of injecting drugs and heroin, phensidyl, and yaba.
These contraband items are sold at different spots and shops in the city and a large number of drug addicts gathering at those places regularly to buy the items and involve them in drug abuse, he added.
