Social awareness for stringent enforcement of CRPA stressed

Raising adequate social awareness has become crucial for stringent enforcement of the Consumer Right Protection Act (CRPA) 2009 to ensure supply of pure and safe foods in local markets.
The opinion came at a views-sharing cum awareness raising meeting on the ‘Consumer Right Protection Act 2009’ organised recently by Rangpur Divisional Office of the Department of National Consumer Rights Protection at its conference room in Rangpur.
Divisional Deputy Director of the Department of National Consumer Rights Protection Khondker Md. Jahangir Alam presided over the meeting.
Assistant Directors of the Department of National Consumer Rights Protection Borhan Uddin and Afsana Pervin discussed various aspects of the CRP Act 2009 and ‘Safe Food Act 2013’ and government steps taken for strict enforcement of the laws, reports BSS.
Officials of the Department of Food, District Livestock Office, District Marketing Office, leaders of the district unit of Consumers Association of Bangladesh and different trade bodies, civil society members and common consumers attended the event.
The speakers said that common consumers are getting benefits and becoming more aware of their rights to getting pure and safe foods and other products following enactment of the related laws and their implementation.
The Department of National Consumer Rights Protection conducted 24 market monitoring drives and realized around Taka 93,000 as fines from 55 business enterprises during the holy month of Ramadan in Rangpur division.
They informed that a hotline service called ‘Bhokta-Batayan’ has already been launched to make it easier for marginalized consumers to lodge complaints.
Khondker Md. Jahangir Alam called for enhancing public awareness raising activities to free the markets from dishonesty through ensuring supply of pure and safe foodstuffs for protecting consumer rights and public health.
