Huge amount of goods are being smuggled daily through passenger bus and train up to Brahambaia Akhaura and truck running on Dhaka -Agartolla (India), Chattogram -Agartala via Brahambaria ‘ route as ‘Luggage Party’ are pouring in different types of sarees, cosmetics, mobile sets from India.
Highway Police have arrested two persons from Dhaka -Sylhet Highway at Bhairab Town in Kishoreganj along with a huge amount of illegal Indian cosmetics worth Tk 2 cr recently.
Highway Police Super (SP) Md. Shahidullah confirmed the incident.
The arrested men Aminur Rahman (35) son of Nazir Uddin at Alipur village in Satkhira and helper Mohammad Sipu (28) son of Zillur Rahman of Golapganj upazila of Sylhet.
The Highway Police have filed a case against them under the Special Powers Act.
Highway Police Super (SP) Md. Shahidullah said that a truck was seized in the Jagannathpur area of Bhairab Port Town before evening on the basis of secret information that various Indian cosmetics were being smuggled in a truck from Jaintapur in Sylhet through Indian to the Capital Dhaka.
During a operation, 292 cartons of 6 types of unauthorized Indian cosmetics products were found with Aloe Vera Jell , Vetnuvet Cream, different kinds of fairness creams like Sun Light cream, Baby Lotion and Johnson Nice Cream.
He added that those arrested during interrogation have not yet confessed.
The investigation is going on. However, it is believed that for a long time these products were being sold in different parts of the country by evading government taxes on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Bhairab
On Saturday, District Police arrested at least 4 smugglers including 224 mobile sets in Bhairab. Additional SP(Crime)in Kishorganj Noor-e-Alam told the New Nation, they raided in Dhaka -bound passenger bus leaving Sylhet on a tip off.
224 Mobile sets recovered from the luggage of four smugglers. RAB-14 members arrested a listed drug dealer named Mozammel Babu (38)and recovered 85 kgs hems, one pickup recently.
