Smuggling of Indian and cosmetics is rampant ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, accoding to information given by sources in police and some employees of shopping malls in Feni.
The smuggled goods are being sold at different shopping malls in Feni district town and its upazilas. Some dishonest businessmen are engaged in the malpractice through their agents and they are selling those with the legally imported ones.
Motin and Habib sales men at two shopping malls at Feni New Market in the district town, said as per their knowledge, many businessmen went to India and they returned to Banladesh with Indian clothes.
Sources said, some goods were being smuggled into the country ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha. On Friday night, Feni Railway Police arrested 09 smugglers from the train of Dhaka Mail and Kornophully at Feni and Gunoboti Railway Station in the city and recovered 50 luggage.
Feni Railway Police sources said the goods were brought illegally from India targeting the upcoming Eid. During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they want to india in the name of travel, but their prime objective was to bring the things evading taxes.
Of the arrestees, many smuggled the clothes and cosmetics to sell while many brought for their contact businessmen.
Many times, they smuggle the things through border areas and railways.
When they bring the goods by train, most of the time, they drop the clothes at different spots from where their associates collect the items aiming to cvade the customs check at Feni.
