The distribution of machine-readable smart national identity (NID) cards will begin in port city Chittagong on Monday.
Chief Election Commissioner (EC) K M Nurul Huda will formally inaugurate the distribution activities at Chittagong circuit house at 11 am.
Abdul Baten, divisional election commissioner, told BSS that the CEC will distribute the smart cards to the distinguished personalities including former City Mayor A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury and city Mayor A J M Nasir Uddin.
In the first phase, the smart card will be distributed to the six lakh residents of three wards under Kotwali and Double Mooring thana of Chittagong City Corporation.
The machine-readable smart cards will prevent its forgery. For being machine readable, the smart cards have additional safety measures against forgery. To maintain security of the smart cards, 25 international certifications and standards have been ensured. The microchips in smart cards will contain all the information of a citizen. Encrypted data would be stored inside a chip in the cards.
The cardholders will get 22 types of services, including banking, TIN, driving license and passport.
