Hundreds of illegal and unfit small boats including trawlers and launches have been carrying passengers without any permission in different coastal areas in Patuakhali district.
Locals said, they have to reach the destination for different purpose by using these illegal small boats due to lack of road communication. Even they don’t use life jacket while travelling by boats in rough weather. Many accidents happen in the Patuakhali coast in rainy season but they have to travel for communication purpose.
It is learnt, BIWTA did not ensure using life jackets and the fitness of hundreds of small boats traveling in rough weather. Local conscious people said, to maintain small boats’, trawlers’ and small launches fitness might not be possible but using life jackets in rough weather should be ensured strictly to reduce loss of lives in boat accidents.
Hundreds of small boats ply everyday with passengers from Kalapara to Taltoli, Newapara, Chotobogi, Nijkata, Fatehpur, Kathalpara, Tungibaria, Fulbunia, Tegachia, Pakkhiapara, Madhukhali, Dhosh, Bablatola, Charipara, Dhankhali, Rangabali to Toktabunia, Chalitabunia, Koralia, Charmontaj, Moudubi, Baro no. and Golachipa to Chotobaisdia, Felabunia, Moudubi, Barobaisdia, Horidebpur, Gabbunia in the district.
On the other hand, some boats with various goods ply from Rangabali, Golachipa, Koralia, Mahipur, Alipur to Patharghata, Mothbaria, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Paikgacha and Khulna.
Local experienced people said, proper maintenance is mandatory in these river routes for carrying passengers to reduce boat accidents and life loss. The authority should monitor all boats plying in these coastal routes under the district.
Passengers said, they travel by small boats for easy low cost of travel in these river routes. The small boats owners’ maintain secret link with concerning authority to run their business. But their small boats have no life jackets in these river routes.
