Police arrested a local Swechchashebak League leader for embezzling and hoarding rice meant for poor under government’s food-friendly programme in Singair upazila on Sunday night.
The arrestee is Abu Bakar Siddique, president of Dhalla union unit Swechchashebak League.
Runa Laila, Singair Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said the local administration conducted a drive at the godown of Abu Bakar and found 4,870 kgs of rice on Sunday evening.
Later, they arrested Abu Bakar for hoarding rice without selling those in open market. Later, a case was filed in this connection.
A court on Monday sent Abu Bakar to jail .
Mohammad Obaidur Rahman, President of upazila unit Swechchashebak League, said he will be expelled from the party if found responsible after investigation.
