Sheikh Russell KC emerged Group B champions to reach the quarterfinal of Federation Cup Football Tournament after playing a goalless draw with Mukitjoddha Sangsad KC in the last group match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Sunday.
Sheikh Russell KC will play the 3rd quarterfinal on Thursday (Feb 26) against the runners-up of Group C, either Dhaka Abahani or Chittagong Abahani, at 6:15 pm.
On completion of the group matches, both Sheikh Russel KC and Muktijoddha Sangsad secured four points each to reach the quarterfinals. But Sheikh Russel KC emerged group champions and Muktijoddha SKC finished group runners-up by virtue of better goal difference.
Sheikh Russell KC beat Uttar Baridhara Club by 5-0 goals while Muktijoddha SKC defeated Uttar Baridhara Club 4-0 in their first group matches
After a barren first half in the day’s match, Sheikh Russel KC defender Waly Faisal came close to score in the 60th minute but he sent the ball straight to Muktijoddha custodian Titumir Chowdhury after beating an opponent defender following a combined attack with Nigerian forward Kingsley Chigozie
Muktijoddha’s Senegalese forward Camara Sarba saw his shot deflect off a Sheikh Russell KC defender’s feet in the 71st minute. In the 75th minute, Sheikh Russell KC forward Emily sent the ball wide from the danger zone.
