At least six people have been abducted in Bandarban district in two days, police confirmed.
Armed criminals abducted two tourists along with their two guides in Ruma upazila on Saturday afternoon and two traders in Alikadam upazila on Sunday morning, they said.
The police, however, said there has been no trace of the abducted persons yet.
The tourists-Abdullah Al Jubair, 26, and Zakir Hossain alias Munna, 34, residents of Mirpur in Dhaka, and local guides-Mangsai Mru and Lal Ring Chang Bom-went to hard-to-reach forest area of
Rainkhyang at Ruma upazila on Saturday afternoon. Local people said, the tourists and their guides went there to see a water body at Rainkhyang after visiting Keokradong hill. They were kidnapped by armed criminals in the dense forest, which is the furthest end of Ruma upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ruma Police Station Shariful Islam said a combined group of police and the army have launched an operation to trace them.
On the other hand, the two abducted traders are Md Ali, 40, and Saiful Islam, 30. They are from Chokoria area of Cox’s Bazar district.
Locals said, a gang of 10 to 12 men abducted the duo at gunpoint from Kochhopjiri area, 14-km from Alikadam upazila headquarters. The kidnappers later phoned the family members and demanded Tk 3 lakh as ransom for release of each of the traders, said Alikadam upazila chairman Abul Kalam.
Mro National Party (MNP) might be behind the abduction as they have been conducting criminal activities in the area for a long time, the chairman said.
The gang kidnapped one Kashem Soudagar from the upazila eight months ago. He was freed after paying Tk 6 lakh.
Lt Col Mizanur Rahman, Alikadam Zone Commander, said army personnel are trying to rescue the abducted traders and arrest the criminals.
