At least six people went missing as a boat capsized in the Jamuna River in Sariakandi upazila here on Sunday afternoon.
The victims were identified as Jahurul Mondal, 50, son of Nabir Mondal of Chargagua village, Arju Begum, 25, wife of Shahidul Islam, their daughter Mamuni, 3, Ruposhi, 5, daughter of Rafiqul Sarkar of Dhanarpara village in Sariakandi upazila, Ruposhi’s brother Bulbul, 3, and Nayeb Ali, 18, son of Shalu Sarkar of Khatiamari village in Sonatal upazila.
Witnesses said the shallow-engine run boat carrying 23 people sank in the middle of the river around 6pm due to storm wind. All but six managed to swim ashore.
Waheduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sariakandi Police Station, said divers launched a drive to rescue the missing people. The victims were going to Char Gagua from Dhanpara to attend a wedding party.
