Ashulia bank robbery: Six militants get death penalty

The District and Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Tuesday sentenced six members of banned Islamist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team and Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death in a case filed in connection with robbery at a Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited branch at Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital.
The death sentenced convicts are Burhan Uddin, Al-Amin, Mintu Prodhan, Jasimuddin, Mahfuzul Haque and Palash alias Sohel Rana. Of the convicts, Sohel is on the run.
Judge SM Kuddus Zaman of the court also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each. Besides, the court sentenced convict Ukil Hasan to life term imprisonment and Abdul Baten and Shajahan Jamadar to three years in the prison. These three also belonged to the same militant group.
On May 25, the court set the date for declaration of the verdict on completion of submission of arguments on behalf of the prosecution and defence.
On April 21 last year, the robbers shot eight people dead and injured at least 25 others  
in the Ashulia branch of the bank in broad daylight before leaving with looted
Tk 6,87,193’00. The eight victims included manager of the branch Waliullah, two security guards- Kazi Badrul Alam and Ibrahim, customer of the bank Shahabuddin Palash and local businessman Nur Mohammad.
The mob captured and beat one of the robbers to death on the spot. On December 6 last year, Dipak Kumar, Investigation Officer of the case and Officer-in-Charge of Ashulia Police Station, submitted the charge sheet of the case against 11 accused of the case.
On January 21, the court framed charges against the 11 accused. Of the 97 prosecution witnesses, 64 testified in the case. According to the charge sheet, 13 people were involved in the robbery and killing.
One of the 13, an accused was killed by mob while the mastermind, Abdullah Al Baki, was later killed in a shootout with the law enforcers in the capital’s Gabtoli area.
The charge sheet included 11 accused and they are Burhan Uddin, Al-Amin, Babul Sarder, Mintu Prodhan, Jasimuddin, Abdul Baten, Mozammel Haque, Ukil Hasan,
Mahfuzul Haque, Shajahan Jamadar and Palash alias Sohel Rana. All of them are allegedly members of banned Islamist outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team and Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
Examining the records and depositions of the witnesses, District and Sessions Judge of Dhaka pronounced the verdict acquitting two of the 11 accused.
