Six killed, 26 hurt in Rangpur road crashes

Six people were killed and 26 others injured in two separate road accidents at Pirganj and Pirgachha upazila in Rangpur district early in the morning yesterday (Saturday) and Friday night.
Four people, including a female passenger, were killed and 25 others injured near the Angrar Bridge on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway under Pirganj upazila in the district at around 5:30am.
Police and local sources said that the accident occurred when a Dimla bound passenger bus from Dhaka and a Tangail bound stone laden truck from Rangpur collided head-on while giving side to each other.
The passenger bus fell into the roadside ditch as its driver lost control over steering, killing four of its passengers on the spot and injuring 25 others.
The deceased have been identified as garment workers Osman, 28, Manik, 25, Nurul Islam, 35 and Momen Begum, 40, from Dimla upazila. On information police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured passengers with the help of locals.
Eight of the injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with critical condition while the
rest were undergoing treatment at Pirganj Upazila Health Complex.
Md Akhtaruzzaman Prodhan, Officer-in-Charge of Pirganj Police Station said that the bodies were sent to RMCH morgue for autopsy.
A case was lodged in this connection, he said. In another incident, two motorcyclists were killed and their companion was injured at Kolabari on Rangpur-Lalmonirhat Highway under Pirgachha upazila at around 9:00pm on Friday. Police and local sources said that the accident took place when a Lalmonirhat bound pick-up van from Rangpur collided head-on with a Rangpur-bound motorcycle carrying three youths coming from the opposite direction in the area, killing Poncha Pado, 30, son of Kali Pado of Mistripara area in Rangpur city on the spot.
Injured Shafikul Islam Mithu, 28, and Abdur Rashid, 30, of the same area were admitted to the RMCH with critical condition where Shafikul Islam Mithu succumbed to his injuries early in the yesterday morning (Saturday).  
Mokbul Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Pirgchhha Police Station said they had sent the bodies to RMCH morgue for autopsy and a case was filed in this connection.
