Six cops hurt in anti-drug drive

Six policemen were injured after being attacked by drug peddlers during an anti-drug drive in Jaintiapur border area on Friday night.
The injured are – Sub-Inspector Azizur Rahman, assistant sub-inspectors Raihan Kabir and Rubel Das, constables Tapu Nath, Saiful Islam, and Jamal Ahmed of Jaintiapur Model Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the area and arrested three drug peddlers with yaba pills around 9:30pm, said Shamal Banik, the police station’s in-charge.
The arrestees were identified as Jamal Uddin, 35, his brothers Kamal Uddin, 40, and Abdul Hannan, 27, residents of Kamlabari village in the upazila.
Other drug peddlers attacked police and tried to snatch the trio, leaving six policemen injured. Another police team rushed to the spot and drove away the attackers, the OC said.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Aminul Islam said the drug peddlers’ bid to snatch the arrestees failed.
In a separate drive, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested two drug peddlers – Md Rafiq Ahmed, 60, and Md Russel, 32 – from Chadnighat in Dakshin Surma upazila at night with yaba pills and phensedyl.
“Three local weapons and Tk 1.32 lakh were also seized from them,” said ASP Md Moniruzzaman of Rab-9.
