Sirajganj floods damage crops worth Tk 200 crore

Floods in Sirajganj district have damaged crops worth nearly Tk 200 crores official sources said.
About 60 unions of Belkuchi, Shahjadpur, Chauhali, Kazipur, Sirajganj Sadar and Ullapara upazilas in the district were inundated due to heavy rainfall and three-phase floods since the first week of June this year.
SM Shaheed Nur, Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Sirajganj, said Aus and Aman paddy, jute, vegetables and seed beds on about 22,665 hectares of land were affected in the floods.
Among those, B-Aman paddy on 7,572 hectares was worst affected, while crops on 6,800 hectares were totally damaged.
Other affected crops are jute on 7,270 hectares of land, while Aus on 2,655 hectares, sesame on 1,760 hectares and seedbeds on 960 hectares.
About 2.23 lakh farmers were affected in the floods and the total damages worth Tk 212 crore.
In 2019, corps on 18,101 hectares were affected while total damage was about Tk 100 crore.
However, DAE official Shaheed said, preparations on farming more crops are being taken as well as providing government incentive package to overcome the damage.
Farmers in the district are being advised to fulfill this target, he added.
Md. Fariduddin, Deputy Assistant of the Khulna Water Development Board, said: “The dam had been repaired four times before by both administration and local efforts. But due to lack of sustainable repairs, the dam collapsed repeatedly, causing tidal water to enter Paikgachha. Meanwhile Tk 3 lakh has been allocated for repairing the permanent dams.” Paikgachha UNO ABM Khalid Hossain Siddiqui said. “The tidal water has stopped entering the affected areas since the embankment was repaired through local efforts on Wednesday night. Emergency measures will be undertaken to establish sustainable dams here.”
