Four accused cop members in the murder case of Ex-Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan have been remanded again by RAB for the second time for four days.
The four policemen are Assistant Sub-Inspector Liton Miah and Constables Safanur Karim, Kamal
Hossain and Abdullah Al Mamun.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) took them in their custody from Cox’s Bazar district jail for questioning around 11am on Sunday, confirmed Md Mokammel Hossain, Superintendent of the Jail.
They were first taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital from jail for health check-up and later taken to RAB-15 office in Cox’s Bazar for questioning, the RAB officials said.
The Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, ASP Khairul Islam of RAB, said, The second round of remand was sought on August 24 for further questioning of the cops. The court granted a four-day remand.”
Earlier, three other accused in the case, suspended OC Pradeep, Inspector Liakat, and ASI Nanda Dulal, were remanded for questioning. Pradeep was remanded for 15 days in four phases, and Liakat and Nanda Dulal for 14 days each in three phases.
Although Liakat and Nanda Dulal gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Pradeep did not agree to do so. All of them are in jail now.
Eight people, including three members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), have so far given confessional statements.
Meanwhile, the probe committee formed by the Home Ministry to investigate the murder of Ex-Major Sinha will submit their report to the ministry today, said Md Mizanur Rahman, the probe committee Head and the Additional Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong division.
Addressing the media at a Cox’s Bazar hotel on Saturday, He said , the 80-page report includes 12 recommendations.
“We have detailed how the incident unfolded and suggested measures to prevent these kinds of incidents from happening,” said ADC Rahman.
At the briefing, it was said that the probe committee has already taken all preparations to submit its report to the Home Ministry.
The committee is going to submit the investigation report in 35 days after extending their deadline four times, said Rahman, head of the committee.
Sinha was killed in police firing at Baharchhara police check-post on the Marine Drive Road between Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf on July 31.
His elder sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed a case with the Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court over the killing, against a number of policemen of Teknaf police station.
On August 2, the Home Ministry formed a three-member investigation committee to look into the incident. Later on August 4, the probe panel was reconstituted with Additional Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Mizanur Rahman as its head.
Seven police personnel, including former Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station Pradip Kumar Das and Baharchhara police camp In-Charge Liyakat Ali, were suspended in connection with the killing.
Thirteen people, including the seven suspended policemen, have so far been arrested over the killing.
