Noted folk singer and composer Bari Siddiqui died at a city hospital early Friday. He was 63.
He breathed his last at Square Hospitals around 2:30am, Shabbir Siddiqui, son of Bari Siddiqui, told UNB.
The noted singer had been on life support at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital since Saturday.
Bari Siddiqui, who had been suffering from kidney-related problems for a couple of years, was admitted to the hospital on Friday night after he fell unconscious following a chest pain.
Shabbir Siddiqui said his father will be buried in their village home at Chollisha Kaligram of Netrokona.
Two namaz-e-janazas were held at the premises of Dhaka University Central Mosque and Bangladesh Television in the morning.
His well-wishers, coworkers, students, fans and people from all walks of life paid tributes to the eminent folk singer.
Born on November 15, 1954, Bari Siddiqui obtained his bachelor’s degree from Dhaka University and joined Bangladesh Television in 1985.
He won the Bachsas Award for his music direction in the film, Srabon Megher Din (1999), for the song Showa Chan Pakhi. He released a folk album, ‘Lokhkho Tara’, in 2000.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of eminent folksinger, lyricist and flautist Bari Siddiqui.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister recalled the outstanding contributions of Bari Siddiqui towards enriching the country’s folk songs.
“The people of the country have lost a popular folksinger at his death … as long as the folk songs will exist in the country, he will remain ever alive,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family members.
