The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday sent singer Asif Akbar in the jail rejecting remand plea of the prosecution and his bail petition in a case was lodged by lyricist and composer ShafiqTuhin on charge of music piracy and threatening him on the Facebook.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Kumar Roy passed the order after investigation officer of the case and Sub-Inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Proloy Roy filed a petition seeking a five-day remand of Asif. To the contrary, defence counsel submitted a petition seeking Asif’s bail along with the plea for cancellation of the remand prayer.
Meantime, the singer told the court that he was falsely implicated in the case, as it was part of a conspiracy to harass him. The charges brought against him were fabricated, so he appealed to the court to grant him bail cancelling the remand prayer.
Hearing the submissions of both sides, the court rejected both pleas and ordered to send him in the jail. Asif was arrested from his studio at Moghbazar in the city at around 1:30 am on Wednesday.
According to the charges, singer Asif sold out digital copies of several songs without permission of the singers, which is an offence under the ICT Act. The case was filed with Tejgaon Model Police Station on Monday. Asif was made accused in the case with four to five others.
