Silk market to fetch Tk 500cr by 2017 : FBCCI

The market of the silk sector will reach at Tk 500 crore by 2017 from the existing Tk 7.50 crore, said Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Matlub Ahmed on Saturday.
The sector is going to avail a hundred crore bank loans from various financial institutions within one year, he said while addressing a seminar on ‘Export Potential of Silk of Bangladesh’ at the conference room of FBCCI in the city.
The seminar was jointly organized by FBCCI and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation of Germany.
“The silk products of the country have a vast demand in the international market. So, we need to promote the sector through supplying of all logistics and financial supports”, said Matlub Ahmed.
The FBCCI President urged the exporters of manufacturing industries to take effective initiative to export silk products along with their products with a view to promoting the huge potential sector in the concept of diversified export product in the international market.
Matlub Ahmed requested the silk stakeholders to supply best quality silk products to compete with the alternative destinations. The FBCCI President said the trade body would work sincerely for reviving the traditional silk sector in the country.
He said, “We will work together to regain its lost glory as it has a big market in both domestic and global. We will find-out the existing problems and possibilities. We will see Bangladesh’s original silk products in all the local markets near future”.
Speaking on the occasion, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Preident Md. Siddiqur Rahman opined that the best quality silk products would be a brand of Bangladesh. He assured his all out support to flourish this sector in local and international market.
 Silk Industry Association President Liakat demanded of the government to provide cash incentive for the stakeholders. The government has created the National Silk Rules in 2005, but till it is not implemented, he claimed.
Silk Development Board occupies eleven gardens, he said and demanded for establishing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative to run the said silk gardens for better productivity.
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation Country Director Dr Najmul Hossain presented a keynote paper in the seminar. He urged the government as well as the private sector to take special attention to flourish this sector.
FBCCI Senior Vice-President Md. Shafiqul Islam Mohiuddin presided over the seminar.
