The significance of the 7th March is endless in the history of the independence of Bangladesh. On this day 44 years ago, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the leader of the largest political party in the National Assembly at that time, delivered a epoch making speech at the Race Course maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan), outlining our responsibilities and duties in the event of crack down by the Pakistan Armed Forces.
As such, when the crack down began, the seven and a half crore people of Bangladesh rose in revolt, took up arms, fought relentlessly and finally achieved independence at a huge sacrifice. In truth, the 7th March speech of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman guided and inspired the nation to the independence.
To many, 7th March is the Independence Day, and not 26th March. And if it is not possible to bring a reform, 7th March should be recognized as ‘Bangladesh Day.’ Will the government consider the issue?
