High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla suggested effective efforts to strengthen further the infrastructural facilities at land customs stations to help boost regional trade, business and investment.
“The sub-regional connectivity and development of infrastructures at land customs stations would further promote regional trade among Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal,” Shringla said while addressing a discussion meeting here on Sunday.
Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) organised the meeting at its auditorium to explore the potential in the fields of bilateral, sub-regional and international trade and commerce among South Asian region.
The Indian envoy told the meeting that Rangpur could become the cross road to connect many south Asian countries in expanding regional trade and business.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that the trade of Bangladesh with India increased about 10 times over the years, and both the countries would continue to work and move together for further progress.
“Bangladesh has already started investing in India and the size of such investments would continue to rise in future,” he said.
Regarding the Teesta water-sharing treaty, Shringla said both the governments were working sincerely on the issue and put emphasis on inclusive river managements, involving all stakeholder countries, to reap maximum benefits by all peoples concerned.
Rangpur City Mayor Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu and Assistant High Commissioner of India, stationed at Rajshahi, Abhijit Chattopadhyay also addressed the event.
RCCI President Abul Kashem delivered welcome speech, emphasing on resolving some problems to further strengthen the relations between the two neighboring nations.
He stressed on improving infrastructural facilities, turning Burimari, Chengrabandha, Sonahat land customs stations into full-fledged land ports and re-opening of rail routes through Moghalhat, Gitaldaho and Chilahati borders to help enhance bilateral trade.
