Several areas of Shatkira district went under water in last three days as tidal surge overflowing nearly rivers causing breach of an embankment constructed by WAPDA. on Thursday.
The affected areas were Lebunia of Gabura union, Pratapnagar and Sreeula unions of Assasuni Sadar upazila, and Dayarghat and Jelekhali of Assasuni Sadar union.
Tarun Kanti Sarkar, a fish farmer of Puijala village in Sreeula union said: “In cyclone Amphan our locality escaped flooding, though other places here got flooded. But this time with the recent surging tides, crops, fish enclosures, and homes, went under water causing us tremendous loss.”
Fish farmers in the affected areas said shrimp worth crores of Taka got washed away with the rising tide waters.
Milon Boswas of Pratapnagar union said: “The whole union is now submerged with the recent water level rise and road communication has been disrupted.”
Gabura Union Parishad Chairman Masudul Alam says the Water Development Board (WDB) has not been helping since the Bangladesh Army took responsibility for the repair work. “But the army cannot begin work until the monsoon ends. If the embankment is not repaired quickly, the entire union will get flooded at some point.”
Shayamnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer ANM Abuzar Gifari said: “The rivers have gone 2-3 feet higher than they usually do with the tide. The WDB is working in this regard. Hopefully the rising water can be stopped very soon.”
Md Abul Khayer, executive engineer of Satkhira WDB-1 says they have started work at Lebunia in Gabura and believe that the embankment there will be fixed very soon.
Shudhangshu Kumar Sarkar, executive engineer of Satkhira WDB-2 said: “We have already secured the embankment at 2 or 3 spots which were breached. We have visited the damaged points with contractors for the repair work.”
He added that the Bangladesh Army has been working in some places as well. Although, according to the rules, two departments cannot work on one location, they have joined hands and helped with geo-bags and bamboo for the repair work.
This year’s flood caused around Tk250 million loss to Naogaon fish farmers
As many as 318 fish farmers have sustained a loss of around Tk250 million as their fishes were washed away from their ponds in five upazilas of Naogaon in this year’s flood.
Firoz Ahmed, the fisheries officer in the district said the total area of the victim fish farmers’ ponds are 371.37 hectares. Floods washed away 1,658 tons of fish worth Tk245,420,000; 3,302,000 fish hatchlings worth Tk5,004,000 from ponds and damaged infrastructures worth about Tk1 lakh, reports our correspondent Abdur Rouf Pavel from Naogaon.
The fish farmers who have suffered the loss are from Natore Sadar, Manda, Raninagar, Atrai and Porsha upazilas.
