The two-day long showcase Canada-2015 (trade and education fair) kicked off on Saturday at Sonargaon Hotel in the city to develop trade and commerce between the two countries.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed inaugurated the showcase organized by Canada Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CanCham) in association with the Canadian High Commission in Bangladesh.
This is the third initiative of this kind to showcase Canadian Trade and Education in Bangladesh.
“Bangladesh is growing and must be able to attain the status of middle income country by 2021,” said Tofail Ahmed at the inaugural ceremony.
“The showcase will be pivotal to develop further trade between both the countries as well as help grow the relationship to a new height,” expected the commerce minister.
He said the trade and education fair will bring those people who used to work in Bangladesh-Canada closer.
Referring to the prediction of world-renowned research agencies, the commerce
minister said the future of Bangladesh is very bright and the country is now on track towards the courses.
“If we as a nation work united, Bangladesh must stand lifting its head globally,” hoped Tofail.
A total of 32 firms are participating at the Showcase Canada at 47 booths.
Speaking on the occasion, Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoit-Pierre Laramee said there are many opportunities for Bangladeshi and Canadian businesses to find mutually beneficial areas of cooperation and trade, which is underpinned by the duty free access that Canada grants to almost all Bangladeshi exports.
Citing its LDC tariff programme through which Canada offers duty free access to Bangladesh, the high commissioner said support to exporters is also being offered through the Trade Facilitation Office (TFO).
“Among all the developing countries in the world, Bangladesh in one of only 25 countries that have been selected for support by the TFO,” added Laramee.
FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed and CanCham President Masud Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
