Academic activities at government primary schools in the district are being seriously hampered due to shortage of teachers.
According to the district primary education office, there are a total of 615 government primary schools including lately nationalised 203 schools in ten upazilas of the district. Of them, some 176 government primary schools of the district are running without any regular headmaster. Besides, about 199 posts of assistant teachers are also lying vacant, much to the sufferings of the school kids and fellow teachers.
As many as 37 posts of headmasters and assistant teachers are lying vacant in Sadar upazila, 35 in Kawkhali, 28 in Nanirarchar, 60 in Barkal, 10 in Jurachhari, 63 in Langdu, 60 in Baghaichhari, 18 in Kaptai, 40 in Rajasthali and 12 in Bilaichhari upazila.
Moreover, a good number of existing teachers are now either on long-term or short-term training while some others are enjoying different types of leave, sources informed.
A number of teachers and students said shortage of teachers is not only hampering children’s education, but also other regular activities of the institutions.
In absence of regular headmasters, other teachers performing their duties cannot properly carry out administrative work of the institution due to lack of experience and training.
The crisis of teachers is acute at the schools of remote hilly areas in the district. In some of those schools, there are one or two teachers available at each of schools, according to school sources.
When contacted, District Primary Education Officer Zillur Rahman said, according to Chittagong Hill Tracts Local Government Council Act, the district Primary Education Department is under the authority of Rangamati Zila Parishad. So Zila Parishad carries out the recruitment process of headmasters and assistant teachers in the government primary schools, he added.
But the status of headmasters of government primary schools has recently been promoted to second class one; so the recruitment power is not at the hand of the Zila Parishad anymore, he also informed.
They are contacting the higher authorities to hand over the responsibility of recruitment to the Zila Parishad again, he added.
In addition, the recruitment process of 75 pre-primary teachers under PDP-3 project has started recently, he also added.
Member of Zila Parishad Md Musa Matabbar said that they have recently taken initiatives to fill up the vacant posts of the teachers. He hoped that the crisis of teachers will be mitigated soon.
