The price of brinjal, a popular Iftar item, has shot up by 100 percent to Tk 100 per kilogram in the city’s kitchen market with the advent of Ramzan.
While visiting a number of kitchen markets on Sunday, the reporter found the brinjal selling at Tk100 per kg in retail level.
At Karwan Bazaar, the city’s largest wholesale kitchen market, brinjal was being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg, and Tk 90 to Tk 100 just outside the market.
The price of brinjal was Tk 50 per kg just a week ago.
Meanwhile, the price of other vegetables, like cucumbers, green chilly and other essentials also soared in city markets yesterday.
Green chilly doubled to Tk 80 per kg from Tk40-50 and cucumber was selling at Tk 60 per kg and coriander leaves

at Tk 150 per kg. On the other hand, local ginger was selling at Tk 140 and imported ginger at Tk100 to Tk 120 on Sunday.
“The reasons of sharp rise of kitchen vegetables are high demands and short supply,” said Emran Hossain, President of Bangladesh Kancha Maal Arot Malik Samity.
Popular Iftari items see unusual hike, which will down soon gradually, the leader of the wholesalers’ association added.
A mad rush for buying essential items in bulk for fear of price increases is also a reason behind the sudden hike, Emran said.
